Cronus Zen firmware update, and what to do when it shows 0.0.0

Firmware is the code on the Zen. It changes a few times a year, and scripts compiled for the current 2.2.x series will not run on older builds. Updating takes under a minute in a browser. This guide is the update, the recovery, and the two resets people confuse.

Firefox and Safari cannot see the device; the updater needs Chrome or Edge. Use the CONSOLE/PC port, not PROG.

When to update
Update when a script author names newer firmware, when Zen Studio reports a mismatch, or when Cronus posts a release after a console update. Do it on a quiet day rather than the night before you need the device. Keep every .gpc you use.

- What is the current Cronus Zen firmware?
- The 2.2.x series. Cronus's updater labels the button "latest 2.2.xx"; it always offers the newest.
- My Zen says firmware 0.0.0. Is it dead?
- No. A previous update was interrupted. Enter the bootloader and flash again; it recovers in under a minute.
- Will updating erase my scripts?
- Usually not. Slots survive normal updates. A downgrade can clear them and a factory reset always does, so keep your .gpc files.
- Can I update from a Mac?
- Yes. Cronus's web updater runs in Chrome or Edge, so it works on macOS as well as Windows. Firefox and Safari cannot see the device.
- What is the difference between the reset button and a hard reset?
- The small blue button underneath, held while connecting, enters the bootloader for flashing. A hard reset is P1 and P2 held while connecting for four seconds or more, and it is a factory reset that wipes slots and settings.
